Backpacking is an adventure that blends hiking with backcountry camping. It lets you broaden your horizons beyond local day hiking trails and car campground to enjoy a richer, more immersive, and often more pristine outdoor experience. A key distinction from day hiking is the size of your pack—your backpack (and you) must carry all that you’ll need for 2 or 3 days outside.

WTC holds 2 or 3-day trips from April through November, usually on weekends, to picturesque areas, usually within a 1 to 5-hour drive. Most trips are moderately strenuous and vary in length from 5 to 10 miles per day. Backpackers must be in good physical condition. Recent trips have been to central Pennsylvania, Massanutten Mountain and Shenandoah National Park, VA, the Pinelands of New Jersey, and the Appalachian Trail.

Trips are planned at an open meeting each February attended by all interested to discuss possible destinations and select dates and leaders. An orientation meeting is also scheduled in March or April for new hikers who want to get started as backpackers. See the Hiking Calendar on the website for details. The full schedule is usually available in late March. Email if you have any general questions about the WTC backpacking program.
