The annual membership renewal process begins shortly for the majority of our members. The first renewal notice will be sent in mid-December for a renewal date of March 15, 2021.
I know WTC has not been able to provide our full event program due to the severity of the COVID pandemic. In particular, we had to cancel all our signature events: End to End, Annual Meeting, Picnic, HAD, and Kayak Training. We still value every one of our members, and of course hope to see you renew. Gary Kirk just published the 2019 report which would have been delivered at the Annual Meeting. 2019 was a great year for WTC!
Recently I read there is an expectation that at least 50 million doses of the COVID vaccine will be shipped by the end of February 2021. Of course, that is far short of the approximately 330 million doses necessary to vaccinate every US citizen. But it does provide a light at the end of this tunnel.
Even though we curtailed our events, it does not mean we curtailed our ongoing community outreach. Each year WTC donates about $4,500 to local and national outdoor organizations and state park scholarships to get disadvantaged youth into the outdoors. We still have crews providing trail maintenance, stream maintenance, and invasive plant removal. This year the trails have seen a large uptick in public usage, which adds to trail degradation.
Beyond the community outreach, the club leadership has worked overtime to provide a safe environment for our events. With state guidelines changing regularly, the leadership must be responsive to those changes.
Our largest ongoing expense, the website, still requires constant tending and funding. When the environment is safe for rebuilding our activities, the website will be the lynchpin of our growth.
Now it is your turn. What ideas do you have for a club activity that can work under our COVID rules? The Council has been focusing on our regular activities, but that does not mean we cannot branch out to keep our members outdoors.
The Council is very thankful for all the members that renew their membership, even when they are not receiving the activities they desire. I expect to see our events start growing in mid-2021, with hopefully a full schedule by the end of 2021.
Thank you for your patience and perseverance.
