Speaker: Jeff Chambers – Streams Stewards: “Citizen Science in the Brandywine River Watershed: Nature Conservancy’s Stream Stewards
Stream Stewards is a Citizen Science program, sponsored by The Nature Conservancy in Delaware and the National Park Service, designed to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in watershed stewardship. Stream Stewards trains volunteers to engage with the scientific process by collecting water quality data from the streams that flow through First State National Historical Park (FRST) to Brandywine Creek. By engaging in water quality data collection, Stream Stewards contribute to science-based management actions that will have a real conservation impact in the park. The Stream Stewards program trains citizen scientists to monitor water quality in the Brandywine River Watershed. This presentation will describe the Stream Stewards program and show the kinds of data we gather. The talk will conclude with how citizen scientists helped our local government shut down one pollution source contaminating the water we drink.
