WHEN:
DATE: 08/10/2024
TIME: 8:30am-3:00pm (prompt start, estimated end)

DESCRIPTION: (Wear appropriate clothing & bring water!  Below are some special instructions: what to bring, relative difficulties, interesting features, and carpooling directions.)

We will meet at the Still Pond Coast Guard Station to set up the shuttle to Turners Creek at 9:00 am. This is a paddle of approximately 10 or 11 miles partly through the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay. This is a trip for paddlers with some experience and a boat that is 14 ft. or longer. A spray skirt is also recommended. This is a good trip for anyone wanting to get some experience of paddling in waves. We will stop along the coast to swim when we get too hot.

Please email the leader to attend with any equipment needs and include your cell number.

General Information:

Still Pond Creek is tidal and opens onto the Chesapeake Bay. From the old Coast Guard station you can paddle around the shoreline of Still Pond Creek for approximately 3 miles one way. From the put in you can then paddle out into Still Pond Bay (Chesapeake Bay) where there are sandy beaches available to the north or south for swimming/lunch.

Difficulty and Must Haves:

Without wind this is an easy paddle. A 12’ or longer kayak with a spray skirt is best for going into the bay. Basic kayak training with some follow on paddling is the only requirement to attend this paddle. We typically paddle a bout 10 miles. Bring a lunch, sunscreen, water and all required paddling gear.

Nice to Have and Human Interest:

For windy days a spray skirt is great to have. Numerous waterfowl, to include eagles are seen on the side creeks of Still Pond.

Additional Notes and Shuttle Info:

There is not a porta potty at the launch. No Parking fees. Closely adhere to the speed limit driving through the small towns.
