EVENT
DATE: 08/18/2019
TIME: 9:30am-4:00pm (prompt start, estimated end)
We will be paddling the Maurice River from Almond Road to Sherman Avenue. The beautiful marsh mallow along the river will just about be in full bloom! This section of the river is very technical and challenging to paddle. To quote the late Bill Maloney, it’s called the “paddle good or eat wood” section. You must be of an intermediate to advanced skill level to join us.
We will put in from a small beach below/south of the dam on Almond Road. The beach is accessed from Riverside Drive across Almond Road from Westside Park. The address for your GPS is 472 Riverside Drive Vineland, New Jersey (39.495532, -75.075483). The trail to the beach is just past the first utility pole from the corner on the west side of the road. Just look for the vehicles parked along the road.
The trip will be approximately 5.5 miles of very twisty/winding, sometimes very narrow water, full of river trolls (aka logs/branches/obstacles), which you must try to avoid or get yourself around and/or over, usually by jumping with your kayak. Ohh… I think I forgot to mention that the banks of the river are lined with copious amounts of VERY healthy poison ivy, which I recommend that you avoid. Wearing long sleeves and long pants to limit your exposure is a good idea.
Hope you decide to join us and attempt the Maurice River Challenge!
