Jerry Fickes Trail Dedication
EVENT
WHEN:
DATE: 08/21/2018
TIME: 5:00pm-8:00pm (prompt start, estimated end)
MILEAGE: 5-6 miles
DESCRIPTION: (Wear appropriate clothing & bring water! Below are some special instructions: what to bring, relative difficulties, interesting features, and carpooling directions.)
On 8/21 at 6:30 the City of Newark will rename a trail to honor Jerry Fickes, one of the 3 fallen Wilmington firefighters in the 2016 Canby Park fire. I am planning a short hike to the ceremony and back.
We will meet in the parking lot
at 5:00 pm behind the Newark Municipal Bldg on South Main Street (Elkton Rd.) Hike begins and ends with 4 blocks of sidewalk walking and the rest of the trail is in the shade. Wooded trail is uneven, has tree roots, rocks, possible mud, stream crossings and one area of potentially slippery concrete if it is wet that is under a bridge. Appropriate footwear and poles highly encouraged. Bring water and bug repellant. We will hike to the Rittenhouse Park parking lot and arrive for the
6:30 ceremony and after the ceremony return on the same trail. There is a porta potty at Park parking lot and another on the trail a few hundred yards before the parking lot.
NOTE #1: If it rains within 24 hrs of the hike check the forum for an update by
Noon on Tuesday.
One area may flood and will need to be checked prior to the hike.
