TIME: 10:00am - 12:00pm (prompt start, estimated end)
MILEAGE: 4 miles
Leader: Dan Gillen (C: 215/ 901-0841).
This is about a 1 hour and 45-minute walk. Meet and be ready to go at 10:00 a.m. The shipyard started in the 1800s and was the oldest in the Navy when it was closed in 1996. It is now a dynamic corporate center. We will explore the old structures in the shipyard area and what’s left of the old Naval Station. We will walk among the new businesses moving into a modern business campus. Lunch will be at Urban Outfitter’s trendy cafeteria which is in the old pipe and coppersmith shop along the Delaware River next to an aircraft carrier. It may be hot and there is little shade. Bring sunscreen, hats and water.
Driving Directions: Follow I-95 N to S Broad Street in Philadelphia (Exit 17). Take exit 17 from I-95 N follow the signs to Broad Street and the Navy Yard. (Caution: After the exit you will be heading North on Broad Street; take the first left at the traffic light, and then another left. After this left bear right to the base.) Once you enter the base go two traffic lights, make a left then a right at the first stop sign, go through the next stop sign and the entrance to the parking lot is on the left. GPS address will get you to the Base, but follow my directions once you are on the base. 4807-4855 S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19112.
CARPOOLING: If there is an interest in carpooling, meet at the F&N shopping center at Foulk and Naamans Road in North Wilmington. There is an empty storefront in the strip mall at the opposite side of the ACME, near the Harry Savoy restaurant. Meet in the parking lot in front of the storefront. Prepare to leave at 9:00 a.m. Kathy Tidball and Eric Sallee will be there to help form the carpools
