EVENT

WHEN:
DATE: 12/20/2023
TIME: 9:00am-2:00pm (prompt start, estimated end)
MILEAGE: 10 miles

DESCRIPTION: (Wear appropriate clothing & bring water!  Below are some special instructions: what to bring, relative difficulties, interesting features, and carpooling directions.)

This really nice rolling loop hike is almost completely in the woods but we will cross a paved road twice.  Paw Paws and Mountain Laurel thrive here, with not many invasive plants.  The trails are established and pretty well marked.  Expect some bare tree roots as there is natural erosion on this narrow peninsula.  You will be able to touch the waters on both sides of the peninsula if you want.

There are several distinct environments within this park.  First we’ll hike most of the Beaver March Loop from Rogues Harbor.  The marsh is tidal, but the trails were passable each time I’ve been there.  (Hikers should always pack a pair of dry socks anyway.)  We’ll make our way to the Wapiti Pond Trail and also past the cabins to the Elk River.  We’ll cross an earthen dam.  Then we’ll traverse the Farm Road Trail to lunch under a picnic pavilion.  After lunch we’ll hike the longest trail; the White Banks Trail to the Chesapeake Bay and eventually back to the start.

Please bring water, snack, and lunch.  When not in the woods, the west side of the peninsula can be quite cool, especially on windy days.  As is the case in this season, some areas are marked for hunting so consider some bright clothes.  Hiking poles are recommended for those who like them.  This is a different starting location than used in the past.

ATTENTION: Bad weather may postpone this event because of the travel involved, so look out for any forum notices!

CARPOOL OPTION: At “Fair Hill State Natural Resources Area – P5 (Appleton South)”.  2000 Appleton Rd, Elkton, MD 21921.  Parking passes or fees are required year round!  Plan to depart from there for the hike at 8:10 AM.

WRITTEN DIRECTIONS:
From US-40 at the DE/MD state line. Proceed west on US-40 for 4.2 miles. Turn left onto Old Elk Neck Rd and proceed 8.7 miles. You will pass the State Forest. (Be aware that Google Maps thinks that there is a bridge out along the way on Old Elk Neck Rd, suggesting re-routes starting at McKinneytown Rd. The bridge was replaced more than a year ago. Stay the course, strait until this road dead-ends. There are two stop signs close together as you near the end. At the dead-end, turn left onto MD-272 (Turkey Point Rd) south and proceed 3.0 miles. You’ll pass the Beach and Office turn offs. From the Office, continue on MD-272 for 1 mile south.  Turn left onto Rogue's Harbor Rd.  Proceed 0.5 miles and park on the left.  The restroom is in the lower lot to the right.

LOCATION NOTES:

This is one of the tracts of the State PARK, not the State FOREST!  Elk Neck State Forest and Elk Neck State Park are very often confused. The State Forest’s area is much larger, with the main tract running all the way between Elkton and North East, MD. It has a climbable wooden lookout tower. The State Park is past the Forest and further from Delaware.  At its farthest section, it has a white lighthouse on a 120 foot bluff, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

Rogue’s Harbor Rd has no street addresses!  This parking area is in Elk Neck State Park, where the Boat Launch is located on the eastern side of the peninsula, along the Elk River.
