DATE: 05/03/2024-05/05/2024
TIME: All Day (prompt start, estimated end)
MILEAGE: 8 to 26 miles

DESCRIPTION: (Wear appropriate clothing & bring water!  Below are some special instructions: what to bring, relative difficulties, interesting features, and carpooling directions.)

The Loyalsock Link Trail, plus a side trip to Haystack and Dutchman’s Fall, is my all-time favorite backpacking trip. It will take you to some of the most stunning vistas in Worlds End State Park. The views at High Rock and Canyon Vista are awe-inspiring. The uniquely beautiful and fun Haystacks on the Loyalsock Creek please kids young and old. Unlike previous years, we’ll break this trip to 2 parts to give participants more options.

Part 1—5/3/2024 Friday, a Day Hike to visit the Dutchman’s Fall and Haystack. Meet at Rock Run Rd parking lot (GPS: 41.45974, -76.50948) at 10:00 am on Friday. We’ll hike a loop about 8 miles to visit Dutchman’s Fall and have lunch at Haystack, then hike back to the parking lot. For those who would continue to Part 2, we’ll camp along Loyalsock Creek near Iron Bridge. The creek water is cool, perfect to soak your feet in.

Part 2— 5/4 to 5/5/2024 backpack from Worlds End State Park Visit to Sones Pond and back. Meet at Worlds End State Park Visitor Center (GPS: 41.47187, -76.58143) on 5/4 Saturday at 10:00 am. We’ll register our cars and start hiking soon afterward. The daily mileages are about 8 and 10.

There are some steep climbs on this trip. Although not long, they are quite steep and rocky. Please pack lightly and wear sturdy and comfortable shoes. Hiking poles are very useful as well as bug spray since some sections may be swampy. Please make sure to bring backpacking essentials.

Please TEXT leaders (Jin Xu, 267/217-2151 or Gary Reeser, 443/350-0659) to ask questions and sign up either part or both. Participants will need to let leaders know of their recent backpack experiences as every participant contributes to the safety of the whole group.

We’ll have at least one carpool from Holiday Inn in Lansdale, PA near the entrance to I-476 at 7:00am on Friday. Other carpool options can be arranged by the participants.
