EVENT

WHEN:
DATE: 04/20/2024-04/21/2024
TIME: All Day (prompt start, estimated end)
MILEAGE: 11-13 miles

DESCRIPTION: (Wear appropriate clothing & bring water!  Below are some special instructions: what to bring, relative difficulties, interesting features, and carpooling directions.)

We will leave early on Saturday, April 20. If you want to carpool, meet at the Delaware Welcome Center Travel Plaza on I-95 in Newark at 9:30 AM. Park in the car parking area closest to the gas pumps. Our destination is the Batsto Visitors Center Parking Lot in Wharton State Forest. We should arrive there around 11:00 AM. From the parking lot, it is a 6-mile hike to the Lower Forge Campground, which is where we will pitch our tents for the night. On Sunday morning, we will pack up and hike 6 miles back to the Batsto Parking Lot.

Please make your own campsite reservations at camping.nj.gov or call 609-561-0024. We are staying at the Lower Forge Campground. Campsites are $5 per person (out of state resident) plus $8 transaction fee. Each campsite holds 2 tents.

The terrain is easy with few rocks and little elevation change. The biggest challenges will be the potential for cold weather and avoiding the Jersey Devil. The campground has a port-a-potty but no showers. We will have to filter drinking water from the Batsto River, which is adjacent to the campground or from whatever stream we happen to cross.

Driving distance is about 75 miles each way from the Travel Plaza. Contact Coleen or Gary for details and to sign up.
