This will be a 2-day / 1-night backpacking trip on the NJ section of the AT. We will meet Saturday morning at 8am where the AT crosses NJ-284 (GPS: 41.288336, -74.552155), which effectively is a dirt pull-off for 4-5 cars.; attendees who are not present at 8am will be left behind. Attendees are welcome to follow Susan and me from our house in Historic New Castle which we will be leaving at 4:45am on Saturday for the ~2 hour and 47 minutes’ drive (stopping first for coffee). We will then pile into 1-2 cars and drive to the Carver’s Gap Parking area which is ~ a 45-minute drive. We should be hiking away from the car by 9am on Saturday. On Saturday we will hike 10.9 miles ending the day Rutherford Shelter where we will camp for the evening. Based on a conservative 1.5 mile per hour pace we should arrive at the shelter in 7.5 hours or at 4:30 in the afternoon; sunset is at 6:18pm. The next morning, we will leave camp by 7:30am (sunrise is at 7:09am) and will hike the remaining 12.8 miles which at the same pace will put us at the NJ-284 parking area at 4pm. We will shuttle back to our remaining cars and drive home. Over the 23.7 miles we will ascend 3,057.4′ and descend 3,561.4′. Beginner backpackers are absolutely welcome to join us. Attendees are expected to be in modest physical condition, be self-sufficient with gear, have a 15- or 20-degree sleeping bag and accept traveling as a group. The average high temperature is 64 degrees and the average low temperature is 42 degrees. Contact Greg with questions and to sign up.
