HIKING Multiple Day Backpacking -- for 11-13 miles on 09/04/2021 - 09/05/2021 @ All Day -- This will be an easy 12-mile shuttle hike along the AT in Maryland. Beginning at Gathland State Park we’ll hike about 7 miles the first day and stop for the night at the Dalgren Backpacker’s Camp. The second day we’ll do about 5 miles and finish in Washington Monument State Park where the first completed monument to George Washington is located. Along the way we’ll pass another historic structure: Dahlgren Chapel. Driving distance from N. Wilmington is about 140 miles and takes approx. 3 hours. Contact Robin for more details and to sign up.
HIKING Saturday Medium Hiking -- for 9 - 10 miles on 09/04/2021 @ 8:30am - 12:30pm -- Please note start time. With warmer weather still here we will start a little earlier. We will hike the hills and valleys between the Big Elk and Christina Creeks. Prepare for stream crossings, hills, wet grass, and beautiful scenery. Bring water and lunch. ATTENTION: Due to the storm on Wednesday high water caused damage to the bridge and roadway at the Big Elk on Strickerville Road. Those wishing to participate on this Saturday’s Medium Hike with leaded Mary Streaker must get to the parking lot from the Appleton Road 4 ways stop sign intersection, which most people do. Upon arriving at the Appleton and Strickerville Road’s 4 way stop, you will see a Road Closure on Stricklerville Road west; however you are allowed to proceed to the trail head parking lot, which is about a ½ mile from this intersection and well before the section of road that is closed. HIKING Saturday Long Hiking -- for 14 miles on 09/04/2021 @ 9:00am - 2:00pm -- Early opt option can be made available if anyone wants it. Expect hills, rocks, stream crossings, mud if it has been raining. Bring water, lunch, snacks. Part of hike is likely to be in open, so sun protection is advised, as well as insect repellent.
PADDLING Touring Paddling -- for miles on 09/04/2021 @ 9:30am - 3:00pm -- Please email the leader (Louise Young, ) to attend with any equipment needs and include your cell number. Also, please review the newest Covid-19 policy: WTC Pandemic Safety – Wilmington Trail Club. If you use a GPS system enter the nearest address (301 Harvey Dr, Newport) not the exact coordinates. Those coordinates have been a problem for some GPS systems. At that address, turn off Harvey Drive onto Thoms Way at the sign for the Newport Boat Ramp – DNREC. Proceed to the parking lot at the end of Thoms way. There is no shuttle.
