About Us

The WTC has been in existence for over 65 years and counts more than 75 active paddlers from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland among its members.

The WTC paddling group has paddling trips scheduled between March and November. There are trips near and far, some of our frequent destinations include the Lehigh River in the Pocono Mountain, the Youghiogheny River in western PA, and the Gauley in West Virginia. You can look at the 2010 Paddling Schedule to get an idea of when and where we paddle. The 2010 Paddling schedule can be found on the main menu under Paddling > Whitewater > Trip Calendar and Paddling > Sea & Recreational Paddling > Trip Calendar.

To Get Started

All participants of the Wilmington Trail Club kayak training need to complete two skill tests. Swimming, which you should already know, and the Wet Exit which we will teach you.

  • Swimming proficiency test - Kayaking as a sport requires you to know how to swim. You will need to demonstrate your ability to swim one length of the pool, using any stroke that you prefer.

  • Wet exit  - You will be taught how to remove your spray skirt underwater. After being taught this, you will need to demonstrate being able to do it on your own comfortably and safely.

Current Pool sessions are every Sunday morning at the Western YMCA in Wilmington DE or starting in April, weekly night time sessions at Cab Calloway School of the Arts (old Wilmington high school). The YMCA schedule is already posted under Paddling > 2009-2010 Pool Sessions, and the Cab Calloway dates will be posted shortly.
