Learn to Kayak with the Wilmington Trail ClubMinimize

The WTC has been in existence for over 65 years and counts more than 75 active paddlers from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland among its members.

The WTC paddling group has paddling trips scheduled between March and November. There are trips on local streams, trips in the Poconos, and weekend trips to various destinations. You can look at the 2007 Paddling Schedule to get an idea of when and where we paddle. The 2008 paddling schedule will be available by late January or early February of 2008.

Training ProgramsMinimize

The WTC kayak training programs are for anyone over 12 years of age who is new to paddlesport, or who would like to extend his or her current skills.  Instructors are registered and certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA), and provide instruction in accordance with ACA standards.

WTC offers three kayak training programs:  River Easy, River I and River II

  • River Easy - is designed to teach kayakers basic strokes and maneuvers so that they can enjoy kayaking on lakes, ponds, and gently moving streams and rivers Recreational or touring (sea) kayaks would be suitable for this type of kayaking.  River Easy is one day of training at Lums Pond State Park.
  • River I  - is designed to advance paddlers from flat and Class I water to class I/II moving water.  River I is two days of training - the first at Lums Pond State Park; the second on Class I/II moving water on the upper stretch of Muddy Creek in York County, Pennsylvania
  • River II - is designed to advance the whitewater kayaking skills you developed in River I River II trains on Class II/II+ whitewater.  Prerequisite for River II is River I (not River Easy) and recommendation of the instructors.  You may take River I without taking River II.

In addition to the training programs listed above, we have follow up trips for River I and River II graduates.  These follow up trips are regular, club paddling trips that give you a chance to safely practice your newly learned skills under the supervision of WTC experienced paddlers.
